Lily/Emma/Kaylee isms 40

Lily: is it a surprise!?  YES, I guessed it right!

Emma: at my wedding, will they throw roses at me?
Me: yes, if you want them to.
Emma: how will they know I want them to?
Me: you can have someone hand out flowers.
Lily: oh!  You can have a little helper!
Emma: yes, I'm going to have Poppo be my little helper.

Lily: Mom, your braid is out of this world.

Me: did you look for a slide?
Jesse: oh, no, I'll go do that now.
Emma: CAN I HELP!?  Let's split up!  I'll look over here...
Jesse: oh, I was just going to look online...

Emma: let's keep our eyes peeled wide open like a banana.

Emma: wouldn't it be fun if we had one of those things that people ding on so we know when someone's here?
Me: a doorbell?
Emma: yes, let's get a dinger so people can ding it.

Lily: listen to the queen of Africa!
Emma: WE ARE NOT FROM AFRICA!

Lily: Alexa (note: the Amazon Echo)!!  Tell me a joke!
Alexa: why did the gum cross the road?  Because it was stuck to the chicken's foot.
Emma: ...ew.  That's disgusting.

Kaylee: Momma, wipe my face careful, I fragile.

Jesse: still in the dark, Dad?
Dad Hildebrand: yep!
Emma: I'll turn on the light for you, Grandpa!

Lily: Mom, you're 29?
Me: yes.
Lily: and soon you'll be 30.  And then you'll be really old.

(Lily falls off a chair)
Me: are you ok?
Lily: yes, you know I fall a lot.

Lily: well, if I'm Violet, Emma is Dash, Kaylee is JackJack, you can be Elastagirl and Dad can be Mr. Incredible.  But we'll call him Bob.

summatime!

Well, I started a race recap right after my half marathon (at the end of April...oops) when the emotions were high and I was still coming off of that.  I just reread it and eh.  I'l just share some pictures and say that I am ok with my time, considering it rained from mile 4 on, and I am pleased to have finished without dying.  Oh, and that the cleaning lady better have my finishers medal prominently hung on the wall of her house, next to my tshirt that the hotel, "couldn't find," when I called.  Gr.  But fortunately, there is a replacement medal.

Uncle Jesse and Cameron
according to the locals, this is a good place to eat.  but not good enough for an over hour wait.  next time.
done and done.
Since then, the girls and I enjoyed all of our school year activities winding down and finished with Lily's dance recital this past weekend.  Over Memorial Day Weekend, some of our best friends from college came to visit with their 3 precious girls, and we enjoyed a few days of not doing much besides laughing, talking, and watching little girls play.  Because there were plenty of them here.  The time went too fast, not enough pictures were taken, but my 3 have asked regularly if Addiston and Bella can come be a part of whatever it is that we're doing.
Kaylee adored baby Charlotte.
this is what college roommates look like 9 (?) years later. Kaylee was doing Jesse's hair, so she put a towel over his shoulders.  Daughter #6 was sitting next to me on the couch.
it's kind of weird we have 6 girls.  but it's super fun.
Lily's recital.  I try so hard not to just spout off emotional stuff about my children, but I just could barely handle how mature Lily was Friday for her rehearsal and Saturday for her two performances.  She loved having me help her get ready and doing her hair, and I think she was enamored by the whole production.  After her groups' turn, I had assumed our family would leave for home, as both sets of grandparents and my grandma had come to watch, but she was so thrilled with watching everyone dance that she and I stayed to watch as many of the acts as we could.  We ended up sneaking in the back of the theater to watch because she couldn't see from the wings of the stage very well, and I so enjoyed the special time she and I had together that day.  With all the grands in, we also celebrated Emma's birthday.  Nothing super elaborate, but we took time before the performances to celebrate Emma being 4.

they danced to, "It's a Small World" and Lily's costume was "Spain."

And this week, we can officially say we're in summer because we've been for ice cream at our favorite place and the girls and I went swimming today with friends!

I'm not sure when she got so big...

Additionally, we're in the midst of a dumb Brood V Cicada bloom and there are dive bombing cicadas everywhere, and it is incredibly loud in some places.  Ridiculous.  My girls think they're great and seriously stop and point out every single one they can find.

It actually hasn't been too bad at our house, but we have been a few places where they were INSANE and everywhere.  It's loud out here, but it's deafening elsewhere.  Bugs.  Loud bugs.  So weird.  The whole concept of 17 year old bugs coming out of the ground is kind of neat, and the fact they make a different noise than the usual obnoxious cicadas makes it a bit better, but I've had a few land on me and freaked out, so any time they want to burrow down into the ground again or die would be great.

Lily isms 40

I am going to need a new title for these, as they now contain more than just Lily...

Lily: when it's dark out my window and Emma's window, it gives me the frightening.

Emma: Momma, can you call the Coleman's and Daddy and tell them to put their bees back in their coops, because they creep me out.

Emma: I run REAL fast, don't I?
Lily: yeah, but not as fast as Flash can!

Me: Kaylee, where are all these freckles coming from?!
Kaylee: uhm, from you basket!

Emma: I'm helping so much.  You love me most, don't you.

Kaylee: don't eat playdough, Zeke!  Yuck!

Me: ew, we aren't using this bathroom, it looks scary.
Emma: were you scared of the walrus?
[I have no idea what she was talking about]

Kaylee: I got some puddle in my feet.  That happened.

Lily: well I don't like our vitamins because I don't like the smell.
Me: just because you don't like the smell, doesn't mean you won't like how it tastes. Brussel sprouts smell bad but you think they're pretty good.
Lily: yes!
Emma: yeah! And I like cherries by Lily doesn't, and that doesn't make sense, does it!?

not the terrible twos

Hello all.

I have mentioned to a few people recently that our little Kaylee Hurricane has become Kaylee the Monster Hurricane.  Holy smokes, kids.  She is certainly pushing everything.  Tantrums involve throwing herself on the floor in dramatic flails, grinning at me when I tell her "no" and repeating the offense, picking on her sisters, developing a little attitude...

Again, for the third time, I refuse to acknowledge the "terrible twos."  Guys.  Just stop.  They are challenging.  They are downright hard.  There are days you want to rip your hair our and get a mouth guard from clenching your teeth so hard.  Get over it, parents.  Kaylee is two and such a handful, but guess what: she's two.  She's learning.  She's trying to test out independence and boundaries.  She's learning what is and isn't acceptable.  She's trying to figure out what she can do to express herself and how I will react, and how to tell me what she wants/doesn't want and hates/needs.  She's pushing her sister's buttons intentionally to see what she can get away with doing, and my buttons, all with a sly grin.  It stinks.  It's a super tough time from 12 months-forever, but just stop writing it off on your child as the problem and see the world from his/her perspective, because they are little people trying to live up to expectations they don't know.  (sigh) end rant.  I'll try and remain civil if you use this phrase around me.

At least consider it.

THAT aside.  The kids are great.

Kaylee, while challenging, is also fun.  Jesse and I openly admit to preferring the toddler thing to infant thing, so even with the challenges, we are enjoying this age.  She is smart, funny, and SO talkative- which is a HUGE difference to her sisters and makes everything so much funnier.  I love that we taught them all sign language, but early talking is a riot.  Her dexterity amazes me for a 2 year old, and since she has two older models, she's running, jumping, and skipping in wonderful ways.  She is doing fantastic in undies again (YES!), and finally sleeping better.  Praise.God.  I think I'm only up about once a night with her...the other two still get up with dreams/bathroom runs, but I am actually getting some sleep again!  Whoa.  Fully rested Amber may be scary to turn loose on the world, so get ready.

Emma.  I have talked extensively on this child and how she is so sweet and sugary one minute and the Mr. Hyde the next.  She is rocking 3 and a half.  For as hurricanely as Kaylee has been, Emma has been extra wonderful: helpful, cooperative, sweet, funny...I think behavior is clicking with her, as she regularly asks, "but I'm being good, right, Momma?"  Praise goes a long ways with Emma, and she just beams when she hears it.  She and Kaylee have recently strengthened the bond they already had and just do everything together.  Not that they exclude Lily, or that she's left out, but example: when Kaylee gets up from a nap, Emma is there immediately and just overjoyed, yelling, "KAYLEE! YOU'RE AWAKE! I LOVE YOU BABY SISTER, LET'S GO PLAY!" or something similar.  Kaylee may have been crying 0.5 seconds before, but she will immediately start smiling and giggling and jump in Emma's arms for a hug.  Best thing ever.

Lily.  My sweet and sensitive biggest girl.  She is so smart and tries so hard.  I love watching her figure things out.  I recently realized that because I learn by seeing/doing, that's how I teach the girls, so I really hope that they either learn the same that I do or I pick up what they need.  Lily really has quite the mind and it sometimes floors me.  One day, we were talking about moving (we aren't), and she was so concerned that we wouldn't be able to fit her bunk bed in the van.  We tried explaining that we'd borrow/rent a truck to move everything, should the need arise, and she was happy with the thought of borrowing Michael's big white snowman truck (haha, yes you, Michael Coleman) to move the bunkbeds.  But then she saw the problem that if we had the truck at the new house, Michael wouldn't have it with him, so we literally had to break it down for her that Mike would drive the truck (with the bunk beds) to the new house and then drive himself and his truck home.  The other day, we were in the van and she asked me what 20-5 was, out of the blue.  Being the homeschooling momma I am, we skip counted by 5's to get to 20, then talked about how the 5 before 20 is 15, and then counted down from 20 to 15 by ones to make sure she got it.  She said she understood after we chatted about it for a minute, and then told me that it was the parental code to unlock one of the games on her tablet, and she just needed to know for that.  Clever girl.  I couldn't even be upset, she worked for it.

note- several kid's games have parental locks on everything so a kid can't accidentally buy/unlock part of the app.  Typically, it is a simple math problem like 20-5 so an adult can easily answer but a child couldn't read/know what to do.  Enter Lily.

Lily took her music box from Uncle Joel and Aunt Kimmy for a show and tell presentation at school and got an about eight 5-6 year olds to sit quietly to hear it play, all by herself.
she bought a beginner sewing kit with her savings from chores!  I'll share the finished product when she's done.

Jesse and I are doing well.  I'm wrapping up a few months of physical therapy I may or may not have mentioned before.  I'm a few weeks out from the Derby Half Marathon in Lousiville and I'm pretty excited about that!  Jesse is enjoying the warmer weather and getting the yard trimmed up and looking better.  We're both looking forward to planting our garden!

Speaking of our garden, last week was such a glorious family day.  We went to church, kids napped and had quiet time while we got some stuff done...I read a book/napped in the hammock and then when the girls all woke up, we had a fantastic time outside.  Jesse had cleared a path to our creek so the girls could play in it and Jesse showed them the culvert that runs under the road to get to the bigger creek on the other side.  Mixed feelings, but if necessary, it's big enough that Jesse and I could absolutely fit through there also.  You definitely would need to shove me, though.
Anyway.  Lily and Emma had an absolute ball playing in the bigger creek.  Glorious.  It was so much fun to watch them and not worry (much) about letting them play out of sight.  Kaylee didn't like the mud and panicked over sinking in the mud, so as long as she was on the rocky parts she loved it also.  Lily and Emma found a muddy bank and played for quite awhile in the mud, where Lily also found a baby turtle!  I didn't believe her when she said she found a turtle, but sure enough, baby snapper.  Jesse eventually hosed the girls off, we all came inside so I could give them a quick bath and eat dinner before we finished the evening out with milkshakes.  You'd think with all that playing, the girls would fall asleep instantly, but no, apparently that's not something we'll be doing this summer.

cranky-pants after getting mud on her feet. of course, I squealed louder than she did when I sank to mid calf in the mud, so I think that's what sent her over the edge #momfail
Obviously, I have spent the last week or two working on this, as we had another fun weekend already, but oh well.  Nicer weather is here and we are loving it!

Lily isms 39

Lily: no stickers for you, Pumpkin!

Lily: I have a story! There once was a snake, who lived by a lake, who dreamed of chocolate cake!

Emma: Kaylee! I have a soccer ball, and now I'm going to soccer.

Emma: Mom, will you ask Google how long it will take for me to feel better?

Lily: are sun rays pink?
Me: yes, they can be...
Lily: and are sun downs purple?

Lily: let's make those smashy potatoes!
Emma: smashy potatoes? You mean mashed potatoes??!

Kaylee: there me go!

Talking about Santa, and that the presents really come from us.
Emma: you give us the presents? You're so sneaky!

In regards to the blue lightsaber band-aid.
Lily: oh look, a good guy sword!

Emma: when Kaylee hurt me, God healed me right up!

Emma: I'm really clever, am (aren't) I?

19 February 2016

standard title.

I started a wonderfully hilarious post at the beginning of January.  And over a month later, I have decided to just hit the highlights, move on, and try to remember to post the ridiculous because I want to be able to come back and laugh at myself in the future.

A. Christmas- because that happened awhile ago.
    1. the girls eagerly anticipated snow and didn't believe me when Christmas was actually super close because we had no snow.  This worked in our favor, as we got Lily and Emma recurve bows and arrows for Christmas and could then go outside and shoot.
    2. Christmas morning was every bit as exciting and chaotic as it should be for 3 young kiddos.  Lily could barely contain herself Christmas Eve, coming out multiple times to check and see if it was Christmas morning yet.  Each year, I think, "oh she is a such a fun age for Christmas!" and every year, I'm right, and her sisters are also.

B. New Years- hey guys, it's 2016.
1.We had a power clean and put new toys away in preparation of having Rick, Nikki and kiddos come hang out for a few days.  It was glorious.

    2. I begged asked our neighbor's if a few of them would be up to watching 5 children, 5 and under, so Rick, Nikki, Jesse and I could go watch Star Wars.  Emily and Paul are rockstars and it was so much fun.

C. Snow Days.  They came and canceled everything for a long time.  And still are throwing my schedule off.
1. the girls LOVE going down to take care of the chickens with me in the snow.  Since the roads are so snowy and there is basically no traffic on my road, I pull them down the middle of the road on their sled.  Lily thinks I'm a sled dog and keeps telling me to "RUN FASTER!" up the slight hill to get to the top of our field...no.

D. Kaylee.  Turned.  TWO.  What.
traditional birthday cake pancakes success
    1. She's hilarious.  Her facial expressions crack us up, she is intentionally funny with her antics and things she says.

    2. She is a motor mouth.  Lily and Emma were barely saying 10 words at two, and Kaylee is speaking in full sentences and it is cracking me up.  Little kids talking is great.  But also, so is silence when it finally comes at the end of the day...
    3. At Thanksgiving, she decided to full out potty train.  I was not in the mood, but fortunately, I went for it.  She did fantastic, including a trip to Great Wolf Lodge (5 hours away) and a whole weekend with no accidents (including the drive there and back) or at the hotel.  She has since regressed some, but that happens and she's doing great again.  The power of chocolate chips.
    4. Birthday cake:

E. Emma is just hilarious.
1. She is loving school, and sings along with Lily's school work, which is so fun to watch.  I realized I was focusing so much on Lily's schooling that I might be missing some valuable sponge time with Emma, so we started working on learning letter sounds with her as well.  I don't expect her to learn the same as Lily, or necessarily catch on as quickly- after all, she is like me in many ways.
2. Emma has also hit a super sweet stage.  Mixed with the sour, but I'll take it.  If she's happy or thankful for something, she will just bear hug you and say, "thank you SO much for..." and it's just the greatest thing ever.

F. Lily is doing fantastic with school.
1. I'm so pleased with how she is doing, even on the days that don't work out quite as planned.  On the rough days, I remind myself that she's only in kindergarten and she will get it, whether it's tomorrow or not until next school year, and that helps me not stress over whatever it is.
2. She is loving ballet still, and I really enjoy that she is doing it.
3. She has also hit a ridiculous stage of whining.  I. do. not. tolerate. whining.  We are handling it, and learning that after she has asked for something once that she may ask once more to confirm our decision and then that is our final answer.  Honestly, sometimes she reminds me of something- for example, "you said I could have a little juice after I finish lunch"- and I don't mind that.  I mind pestering and whining when she doesn't get her way, and the tone of voice that comes with, "no, I want that NOW."  That is unacceptable, and she's learning this.  I know it's just something kids go through, and I'm trying not to be impatient and too hard on her since she has to learn somehow.

G. I lost motivation.  Typical.

"I need to exercise so I can be strong."
Jesse's birthday present. I'm being serious.
"MOM COME QUICK, KAYLEE GOT STUCK." I obviously got my phone first.
